Getu FM Choses Jamiro Broadcast Digital - Jamiro Broadcast Ltd

Getu FM is an Fm Radio Station that Broadcasts in Kimeru Language with the frequency for Eastern Kenya serving: Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Isiolo, Embu, and Kitui Counties. With the studios in the Capital City- Nairobi, Getu FM required a signal contribution system that would connect their program from the studio, located in Parklands, Nairobi to the Satellite uplink center for distribution located at Limuru, 22.5 Kilometres away from the studio.

Jamiro Broadcast carried out a site survey and later simulated the solution required for wireless Point-to-point audio transportation over IP Leveraging on our own integrated
Digital IP STL, A Jamiro’s own Innovation product packaged to fit in Broadcast 3.0 environment by embracing ST 2110 standards for carriage, synchronization, and description of separate elementary essence streams over IP uncompressed video and audio streams.

The Work
In order to achieve the required results, Our Engineers fabricated and erected a 27 metres guyed mast at the studio facility in order to obtain the Line-of-sight and have an acceptable Fresnel clearance from the simulation done.

After installing the antenna 25 meters above the ground at the studio mast and 60 meters on the uplink center, we were able to realize a signal strength of –39dBm with a total link throughput of 85Mbps which yielded 20x more capacity than the required 4.25MB. This means the link has the advantage to transparently transport up to 20 Analog or Digital MPX radio channels with 2.5mS latency, using uncompressed linear PCM 24bit 48kHz (L/R mode) or 24bit 192kHz (MPX mode).

This makes our Digital IP STL an Exceptional, Versatile, Scalable, and Economical contribution system for everyone!

The requirement was to transport only a single audio channel whilst encoding at 4.25Mb/s which left 75.75 Mb as a reserve for expansion. With this capacity, we were able to add telemetry and HD video surveillance service for the customer for all the assets installed on the remote site and connect them on a Multiviewer in the customers’ premise.

The task was completed in 10 days including the design time and project hand-over to the customer.

The Technology
The solution has had a major cost saving on CAPEX for customers with more than one Radio Channel. With the old systems, each radio station would require a separate VHF STL with an individual License for each transmitter. This method separates channels by frequency, so if users want to have two channels, they’ll have two separate frequencies.

We have revolutionized this by having a High-Capacity Duplex Microwave link which makes it possible for other services like monitoring and telemetry for all SNMP enabled devices at the transmitter site since two or more users can share the same frequency in the following manner: User 1 gets to use the frequency for a very short fixed period of time, perhaps 50 milliseconds. Then the channel reverts to user 2 who gets 50 milliseconds. Then it cycles again back to user one who gets a further 50 milliseconds, and so on and so forth…

Other application in our innovation includes our “MCRPack”-(Virtualized MCR for TV Centres) for Real-time LIVE Production, Playout, Encoding and Multiviewers aol leveraging on IP working in the Broadcast 3.0 environment.
